We sell our values to our children. We sell the pest control guy on coming next week instead of today. We sell our skills to our employer and we sell our products and services to customers.

The first book I ever read on sales, way back in 1985 (I think) was Tom Hopkins book on "How to Master the Art of Selling". And it's still the 2nd best book on the topic. Apologies, Tom, but How to Win friends & influence people pipped you out for #1. Without a customer, you don't have a business, you have a hobby.


Agree, no business. Mission. Faith. Hope. Dreams. You may call all this "hobby", but ask ANY REAL scientist what made them build this world. Customers? No. The fundamental wish to build a better world, SOLVE REAL problems (not making profit which now is in direct opposition).

You business guys always forget one thing: you are BLIND to anyone who can't pay for your stuff. However, perhaps they still have right to exist, or even be happy, have future, etc. don't you think?

By the way, do you have ANY way to allow our children PAY for the resources we now transform to the next cars, phones, blockbuster movies, etc? No? Can they make US pay for the garbage continents on the oceans, the mountains of garbage that we create and they will suffer from? No?

You'd better rethink the role of "selling", and at last be able to see what this total focus on "sell" really creates:

Lorand Kedves mission hope faith don't feed hungry children. Gives them focus & purpose, sure. But my attitude is not that of some robber baron oligarch. In order to give others a hand-up (not a hand out), entrepreneurs must succeed in their ventures, which means customers and new value created around solving real world compelling problems. 

Give a mana fish...etc. well how about teaching a village to fish, by bringing a new industry to town & employing people. Let's be honest, the best way to help people out of poverty or over come adversity is not by charity - it's by helping people to find their own way back, and in doing so, many learn to tell the stories that also inspire others. 

And I only care about solving real world problems-I have to -I'm not UNICEF- I don't invest in frivolous businesses, or encourage people to build something that doesn't benefit people. Nor do I encourage them to spend their time on something for which their is no paying audience -Because if they were to do that, the opportunity cost to them & the world would be the solving of the next problem that they never actually got to.


I respect that you gave such moderate answer to my offending statement. You are a good person, but you are wrong, time and really rational thinking proves that.

All you said can be covered by an ancient proverb: "The road to hell is paved with good intentions". The tragic in this statement is that you can't lead anyone to hell with bad intention: you MUST believe that you are good while you lead them to hell.

You refer to that "teach to fish"... Is it my job to teach you how to make profit: make them hungry and sell them fish?
Do you need safe and efficient transportation? Use trains, buses, taxis. Oh no, dammit. BUY the newest car, it will even drive itself, and run on "clean" (???) electricity! Do you want to be happy with the image in the mirror? Live a full life and get used to aging. Oh no, dammit. Buy clothes, cosmetics, etc. Do you want to communicate? Use any mobile phone. Oh no, dammit, buy my newest phone, it has triple camera. Do you want your documents perfectly formatted and usable after decades? Use TeX, it's free, the author finally PAYED for any found bug in it. Oh no, dammit. Buy the newest Office, now it can flash words.

Or to shoot at a real giant, do you know the World Bank?
It started operation in 1944, I guess I can safely say that it has ultimate business power. Do you perhaps know its motto? It is "yours": "Working for a World Free of Poverty".

OK, again. Started in 1944. Has vast resources. Works against poverty. Result since then?

COMPLETE, TOTAL, GLOBAL, EPIC FAILURE.

Your assumption that you can achieve more than the World Bank can be funded on two options:
 - the World Bank is actually an evil organization, and you are strong enough to beat them;
 - you are smarter than all the experts they have and/or have more resources.
So, you can reach the aim they failed, with the same thinking. Otherwise you should admit that you follow a path that simply unable to lead to where you think you are going.

If you are interested, I can give you "forgotten" scientific results, exactly explaining and forecasting our current situation and the inevitable consequences. But unlike the Matrix, or any superhero movie: I can't offer you any "magical outside", only a consciously irrational faith. I am a complete failure, don't follow me if you like "business" - but consider my ideas if you do care about future.

A Fidesz igazi self-made történet. A Fidesz-sztori arról szól, hogy jön tíz-húsz-harminc srác valahonnan, fellázadnak, elegük van a világból, amely körülveszi őket, felhajtják a gallérjukat és megcsinálják a saját történetüket. Mi nemcsak politikai értelemben számítottunk senkiknek, földrajzilag is a ködbe vesző végekről jöttünk. Ami engem illet, talán én lehettem az első ember a családban, akinek azt mondták, hogyha van meló a kertben, és van lecke, akkor a lecke jön előre. 1982-ben jöttem az egyetemre, a budaörsi kollégiumban laktunk, és én csak a 40-es busszal mertem közlekedni, az jelentett nekem biztonságot. Aztán persze megértettem, hogy mindent meg lehet tanulni. Ha nagyképűsködnek az évfolyamtársaid, akkor el kell olvasni azt a tíz könyvet, megnézni azt a húsz-harminc filmet, amivel le vagy maradva, majd utoléred őket. Ezek nem igazi problémák, ezek mind megtanulhatóak. A karakter az, ami nem tanulható.

Igen szép ez a "self made man" mítosz. Hogy is volt?

"Az egyetem elvégzése után, 1987 és 1989 között Szolnokon lakott, innen járt föl Budapestre első munkahelyére, a Mezőgazdasági és Élelmezésügyi Minisztérium Vezetőképző Intézetébe, ahol 1987 novemberétől 1988 márciusáig szociológus gyakornokként továbbképzések szervezésében vett részt."

Eddig sikerült a "self made", Alcsútdobozról indulva ez valóban szép eredmény. Utána viszont ismerős szereplő érkezik...

"1988. áprilistól a Soros Alapítvány támogatásával működő Közép-Európa Kutatócsoport munkatársa. 1989. szeptembertől a Soros Alapítvány ösztöndíjával az oxfordi Pembroke College-ban az angol liberális politikai filozófia történetét tanulmányozta; ösztöndíját az 1990. évi országgyűlési választások közeledése miatt 1990. januárban félbeszakította."

Ez eldőlt, nincs kiadó hely. A legnagyobb történet Puskás Öcsié. És ez a mi történetünk, velejéig magyar történet.

Velejéig magyar, igen, és pontosan bemutatja az interjúalany fejében létező, leendő "magyar valóság" színvonalát.

De mielőtt végleg kihúznánk a nemzeti történelemkönyvből, szabadjon megemlíteni egy másik, "velejéig magyar történetet", akár csak Wikipédia szintjén: Szilárd Leó életét. Talán nem mindegy, hogy egy ország aranya a lábában vagy a fejében van, melyiket állítja példaképnek a következő generáció elé... :-P

Szemelvények:

1933-ban Adolf Hitler vette át a hatalmat Németországban. Szilárd megérezte az új idők szelét: "Bepakoltam két bőröndömet, hogy bármelyik pillanatban elhagyhassam az országot." A Reichstag felgyújtása után elérkezettnek látta az időt és felszállt a bécsi gyorsra. A kocsik kongtak az ürességtől. Másnap azonban már fel sem lehetett férni erre a vonatra és a nácik a határon megállították a kocsikat és kiszállították a zsidókat. "Az embernek nem kell sokkal okosabbnak lennie a többinél, ha boldogulni akar az életben, az is elég, ha csak egy nappal megelőzi őket" gondolt vissza erre a szerencsés, ám nagyon is tudatos menekülésre.

1934-ben Londonban, a Royal Societyben Rutherford előadásában az atommag hatalmas energiájáról beszélt, de kijelentette, hogy az atomenergia gyakorlati felhasználása lehetetlen, mert folyamatot a Földön nem lehet létrehozni. Az előadásról hazatartó Szilárd Leót azonban irritálta, hogy valamit megvalósíthatatlannak mondanak (más források szerint Szilárd nem vett részt az előadáson, csak a London Timesból értesült Rutherford véleményéről). Az általa is terjesztett hagyomány szerint, amikor később London belvárosában, a Southampton Lane-en ballagva megállította egy piros lámpa, akkor ötlött eszébe a neutronok láncreakciója, mint az atomenergia kiszabadításának lehetősége. (Barátai szerint azonban ezen legendában van némi szépítés, ugyanis Szilárd sosem állt meg a piros lámpáknál.)

1953-ban bezárta laboratóriumát és elméleti biológusként kezdett dolgozni. Egyetemi évei alatt 1953-1954-ben biofizikai óraadó tanár volt a Brandeis Egyetemen. 1956-ban megkapta a biofizikai professzor címet a Chicagói Egyetem Enrico Fermi Nukleáris Tanszékén. Mikor Jacques Monod, a párizsi Pasteur Intézet professzora megkérdezte, hogyan vált fizikusból biológussá, ő így válaszolt: "Olyan érdekes a biológia, hát nincs igazam?".

Diagnosztizálta a hólyagrákot, amely betegségben maga is szenvedett. Felesége, Gertrude segítségével áttanulmányozta a szakirodalmat és módszereket dolgozott ki a betegség felszámolására. Két sugárkezelésen is átesett: 1960-ban és 1962-ben. Maga szervezte a radiológiai kezelést, ő számította ki a dózisokat. Betegségét is arra használta, hogy új gyógyászati eljárást dolgozzon ki: a rák radioterápiáját. A sugárkezelések során a New York City's Memorial Hospitalban Szilárd magnóra mondta életének eseményeit, többek közt feltárta a Manhattan tervben játszott szerepét. Számos interjút adott, és sok TV-műsorban vett részt, mert úgy érezte, már nincs sok ideje hátra. Azonban felgyógyult, ezen saját maga is meglepődött. Mindvégig úgy hitte, rákbetegsége csak átmenetileg szorult vissza, de a halála után végzett boncolás nem mutatott ki testében rákos elváltozást.

... azt is értem, hogy akinek a háza végében stadiont kell építeni, annak egy focista a legnagyobb magyar. Ez meg is határozza az ország fejlesztésének irányát.

Azért akinek van kedve olvasni, utánanézhet, hogy vannak olyanok is, akik szó szerint komoly, elismert szerepet játszottak a világ sorsának alakulásában, a mai világ létrejöttében. Talán nem mindegy, hogy kiből lesz példakép a következő generáció előtt - és kinek a nevével nem fog SOHA találkozni a szerencsétlen gyerek.

Végre megértettem. Magyarország államformája tényleg népstadion, polgárai pedig nincsenek, csak szurkolói ("oldaltól" függetlenül - a világnézet szót az itteni kliséhalmazra alkalmazni tényleg röhejes lenne). Ezért teljesen helyénvaló, hogy az ország vezetője egy FOCISTÁRÓL állítja: "Ez eldőlt, nincs kiadó hely. A legnagyobb történet Puskás Öcsié. És ez a mi történetünk, velejéig magyar történet."

Akik pedig esetleg hozzám hasonlóan többre értékelik (csak például, és csak a közelmúltból) Neumann János (akitől az informatika mai formája származik), Szilárd Leó (akinek az atomenergia hasznosíthatóságát köszönhetjük), vagy Bartók Béla (aki korabeli "megasztárként" inkább szekéren zötyögött éveken át, társaival együtt szó szerint az utolsó pillanatban megmentette a népzene kincseit, és kiáltó ellenpontja volt a később persze győzedelmes sötét, ostoba nacionalista uszításnak) teljesítményét, jobban teszik, ha végre elhúznak innen.

Hiszen pár év múlva ezeket a neveket a zengő-kongó stadionok országában úgysem fogja ismerni SENKI, nemhogy felfogni, mit is tettek. Ahhoz ugyanis komoly munkával kiművelt agy is kell (homo sapiens), nem csak láb meg tüdő (homo erectus).

HAJRÁ MAGYARORSZÁG, HAJRÁ MAGYAROK... :-(

kár, hogy nem érti a humort. A kérdés nem kultúrantropológiai vizsgán hangzott el. Egyébiránt sem Bartók, se Neumann nem lehetett volna magyar, ha I.István király nem kényszeríti szó szerint tűzzel-vassal a kereszténységet a magyarokra és nem kevés számításból - most talán helyes geopolitikai döntésnek neveznénk - nem veszi el a keresztény bajor hercegnőt, Gizellát.

A humorérzékemre nem szokott panasz lenni - viszont tény, hogy van, amit nem tartok viccesnek. Csak például: az ország egyik legrangosabb egyetemi versenyének (Tudományos Diákköri Konferencia) intézményi fordulóján a résztvevők egy kifaragatlan(!) ceruzát és egy "Magyarország megújul" narancslogós mappát(!!), az informatikai első helyezettek pedig a versenyt szponzoráló Morgan Stanley befektetési bank buszos meglátogatásának lehetőségét kapták(!!!). Mert egyébként filctollra nem futja a racionalizált költségvetésből, a tanár vesz magának, ha oktatni óhajt. Bocs, ezt a saját szememmel látom, egy kimagasló színvonalú intézményben, a csimpánzok meg szidhatják a hűtlen fiatalokat. Bezzeg ha egy bőrgolyó után rohangálnának...
Tényleg ezen kéne nevetnem?

Ha pedig kultúrantropológia. Elnézést, hogy olyan, az ország elhagyására kényszerített embereket hoztam példának, akik aktív, egyedülálló szerepet játszottak a 21. század mai formájának létrejöttében, akár a (valódi, nem az aktuális ripacsok által kreált) nemzeti hagyomány tudományos és művészi feltárása, akár az atomenergia vagy az informatika területét nézzük. Nem ismerős a nevük? Mert nekik a jelek szerint nincs hazájuk, amely büszkén hivatkozna rájuk. Vagy említsem Selye Jánost, aki teljes tudományos hagyatékát "haza" küldte, itthon meg a konténerekben szétrohadt és a végén eltüzelték? Legalább a NEVE rémlik valahonnan?

Elnézést, azzal is tisztában vagyok, hogy a várban meg kastélyokban parádézó, hosszabb távon inkább Svájc felé kacsintgató szolgabíró úrék minden tevékenysége középkori színvonalú gondolkodással tökéletesen magyarázható - köszönöm, hogy ezt nem nekem kellett felhoznom. Azt is tudom, hogy ma már Machiavelli és Göbbels örökbecsű hagyományait szó szerint követve egy teljes ország hangosabb fele ordító barmokká alakítható (remélem érthető a lényeg: TÖK MINDEGY, hogy narancs vagy bármi más szurkoló), az uszításra nehezen reagálók megfélemlíthetők vagy elüldözhetők.

Mindegy, hagyjuk. (itt utólag töröltem egy hosszabb szövegrészt - nem bölcs dolog olyan szervezettel ujjat húzni, amely bármelyik nap besorozhat)

végre egy politikus, aki látja, érti a világ trendjeit és nem felejt el magyarnak maradni.

Pontosabban: tudja, mit szeret a kocsma színvonalú, távirányítással a megfelelő pillanatban hőzöngésre késztethető magyar, a többit pedig meg tudja félemlíteni. Erre elég az elolvasott tíz könyvből, húsz-harminc filmből (ismétlem: Machiavelli, Göbbels, ...) szerzett tudás.

Világ trendjei?
Egy kétéves gyerek is tud a lejtőn lefelé gurulni, és másokat is lefelé taszítani, utána meg hőzöngeni, hogy én voltam az első, aki lefelé indult... A felfelé mászás az, amihez nem elég a túlkompenzált kisebbrendűségi érzés, nem is próbálkozik vele "a politikus". Minek is, az ő kiskirályságához elég a magyar népstadion uszítható népe (stadion, vasút, kastélyok, néhány fiatal imádó csillogó szemei - persze nem a diákolimpia résztvevői).
Klímaváltozásról tetszett hallani bármit is, vagy napi két miatyánkkal tervezi a kezelését? Tíz éven belül sokmillió ember kényszerül mai otthona elhagyására, ha élni akar. De majd itt lesznek a halszagú hősök, és gyerekeket lőnek halomra Jézus nevében. Ahhoz képest a középkor is álomvilág lesz.

Elnézést, inkább én értem, mire való a várba költözés, a TEK, a hadseregfejlesztés, a totális médiakontroll, én írtam meg évekkel ezelőtt, hova fogunk jutni mára. Ha kell még jóslat, tessék: 2018-ban is Orbán Viktor lesz az ország vezetője - akár elég hozzá egy kopaszok által támogatott választás, akár szükségállapotot kell bevezetni érte. Ennek előre látásához nem kell különösebb erőfeszítés.
Az viszont tényleg kihívás, hogy a jelen gondolkodás szerint "nem elég magyarok" (nem csak megfelelő rokonokkal, hanem világszínvonalú, 21. századi tudással rendelkező orvosok, mérnökök, tanárok, de ma már az értelmes szakmunkások jelentős része is) értelmét lássák ebben az országban dolgozni, élni, gyermekeket felnevelni. Ha sikerült volna értelmezni, erről szólt az egyetem/fociakadémia szembeállítás.
Én erre próbáltam megoldást és partnereket találni évekig, de az a hajó sajnos elment. "végre..."

But thinking that you are a computer scientist just because you can code is the real danger!

Because then nothing stops you from writing working but useless spaghetti, and make your share in (just for example) the 2 billion lines of code that makes Google "the greatest software company"... (or what? ah, yes, the patent portfolio covered by that guano... and sorry, Alphabet of course) :-D

Apart from sarcasm...

If the language does not count anymore, and you feel you can do anything on any platform that the other party can explain and is realistic in that environment, because you have done it several times.
... and if you are able to step back if there are better alternatives than you.
... and if you also understand the theoretical and practical background, that weird stuff from Turing, Neumann, Chomsky, Tanenbaum, Simonyi, the PARC, etc. Not on the "passed the exam level", but behind each and every decision you make and line of code you type.
... and if you also know the environment (the global human civilization), and realize that you work on the very backbone of it.

Then you may think you are a computer scientist, because THAT is the "scientist" part of the statement. Otherwise, you are a coder - though perhaps a brilliant one.

How do you enter "the valley" with a really fundamental idea (and working prototypes by the way) that would take too much time to understand? When everyone turns away after the second talk saying “Never invest in a business you cannot understand”?

You cannot enter any market, even your local one with an idea that is not easy to understand. That's why good timing is a crutial part of success.

Peter Kovacs I don't talk about "entering the market with a disruptive strawberry flavored chewing gum", but core technology.

I went back to the university as student at 42 to check if I am lunatic. Instead, I have learned how my research is connected to Neumann, Turing or Shannon. I had to ask my friend to be the supervisor of my thesis because for him it was OK that he, the teacher does not understand.

I can tell you WHY the Neumann architecture was ground breaking, WHY the most brilliant programmer, Charles Simonyi works on Intentional Programming behind closed doors. I can show you why the elephants work on PaaS and what they do wrong. But of course it takes time and effort to understand, which is not popular today…

Of course, our last startup failed - the gods of IT are used to talk, not to listen. I am unemployed. At least I have a few months to focus on my studies, thanks HR guys :-)

So yes, I really respect George's message, and I think you can't blame me for being shy, or unaware of the cultural barriers. I only ask for your advice: What do you think the "good timing" is for a new Neumann architecture - if you don't want to see it in the patent portfolio of a giant? :-D

Peter Kovacs I asked a practical question, you gave me your ultimately depressing opinion (which is my direct, personal experience of 20 f*cking years of guts out work that you can't even imagine, that's a cultural barrier, bro, but I am not Eminem, so stop it now...), then "fixed it" with a wink. Should I inform you that this is in direct opposition to George A. Tilesch 's message, or can find it out alone? :-)

But let me answer in your style.

I am 43, so (if you dare to look around for a second with open eyes) I will likely last longer than the illusion you have about the world. I wanted to talk about 2 things everyone must understand about creativity before that.

I guess to sharpen the issue, is the ability to express humor only a matter of how much data you have been exposed to over the years, or - if to be a bit philosophical - is there this extra "something" that for some reason cannot be just a mere extrapolation of learned lessons? Why are some people astute or funny and can blurt out this brilliant concoction of ideas from all walks of life whose sum is a witty conclusion that we all nod to and can understand but would never think about saying at the right moment in the right context?


Noa Zamstein Why do you want to teach computers something that human beings seems to have lost while working with them? Human and computer intelligence is just like flesh and bones: not to be mixed or replaced with each other, it's not a race but can be a symbiosis. Otherwise, we die. Not because AI would kill us - but because we are not wise enough to live with our power. Just look around. We don't have time for things like "analyzing humor"... we right now are a lethal tumor. ;-) (to sharpen the issue)

Lorand Kedves I think you make a good point, but I would dispute that humanity has lost creativity because they are working with computers. The act of building computers themselves and associated software and applications is a creative process. Computers are another medium for expressing ideas and feelings. Just look at all digital art and entertainment, blogs, etc.


Nikola Ivanov, I also know the marketing stuff, but coding and creativity are different animals (and I have spent the last 20+ years with solving "impossible" design and coding tasks).

To me, creativity is science, but IT became business, and business loves engineering, not science. Do you really know that all the "new" inventions like the internet, OOP, tablet, ... came from ARPA (which then became DARPA) or PARC around 1970? The past decades were fantastic in engineering(!): reducing the size, consumption and increasing capacity and speed that made those old inventions physically possible.
Sure, Jobs, Gates, Zuckerberg, Musk, etc. should be considered "creative" - sorry, that place is occupied by Lovelace, Neumann, Turing, Shannon, Hamilton or Charles Simonyi - but it takes a lot of time and effort to understand what they did (and today we are too busy chasing profit and fame, have no time to learn and understand them)...
I did watch the growth of the digital art, etc., as an IT expert and thinker - but all I see is quantity and marketing beating quality.

Lorand Kedves I get your point and will check out Technopoly. It appears that you are dividing creativity into two separate categories by tying it either to science or to "marketing" and "profit." I can see how the two types of creativity can be different, but to argue that creativity just does not exist anymore is false. Sure, there is a lot of junk our there that people pay money for, but there is also a lot of innovative, creative, clever, elegant, and useful ideas and products.


Nikola Ivanov, I think we have no argument here: I wrote "human beings seem to have lost". I mean: not enough for keeping our civilization alive: a 1m jump to cross a 2m gap equals to zero considering the result... ;-)

My original point was that we try to push fundamentally human values to machines (from humor to ethics), while we measure humans more quantitative and less qualitative ways. Naturally, because quantitative improvements are easier to plan, so this method is dominant in a business oriented environment. Qualitative, unplanned, wild changes (that is "creativity" in my world) "should be done by someone else". (the "20% free time at creative companies" is actually mind farming, not much more)

There is creativity in finding the best possible answer to a complex, yet unanswered question. That is engineering and it has great importance. This is what we should thank our technological improvements in the past few decades.

And there is the creativity in finding a truly important question among the myriads of possible questions. That is science, and requires fundamentally different approach along the whole process.

We know a lot about how to support engineering creativity - but scientific creativity seems to be out of sight, thanks to its direct opposition to what we call "economy" or "society" today.

An example: engineering creativity is looking for an answer how to handle the garbage continents in the oceans. Scientific creativity asks: "why the f**k do we CREATE garbage???" And stops, because this is a much better and fundamental question, the job is done, the rest is engineering. Business guys say "this question cannot be asked", tap the head and kick science out of the way of making profit. Science leaves by saying "Have a nice funeral, guys. Don't forget the fireworks..."
